We used the rack in earnest for the first time yesterday afternoon and it was brilliant, a change from our old system where we attached support bars to the bikes and hung the bikes up after we padded everything with foam and then steadied with bungee cords. No setup time at all just lift the bikes on, lift the bikes off and ride and as you say nothing protrudes beyond the vehicle.
